Abstract

The research report assesses how well we understand real demand for water in rural areas at a time when much rhetoric is expended on 'demand responsive approaches'? Their answer is not very well, and the report aims to fill a specific gap on the contributions made by productive uses of domestic water in rural South Africa. It documents patterns of household water use for activities such as backyard irrigation, beer brewing, brick-making and construction and their economic contributions to livelihoods. The report introduces some of the main issues affecting the willingness to pay for water in rural communities, and it also discusses some of the challenges ahead for the community water sector in South Africa.
