Abstract

This handbook is meant as a tool for those working at the grassroots level with communities in developing countries. It provides practical information about information sharing and processing in the community. It also gives information about how to maintain an information resource center once it is established. It will teach the reader how to identify, collect and provide access to the information that assists and supports community transformation. This second edition has the following additional materials: i) use of ICT, telecentres, internet, and appropriate technologies, by grassroots groups to achieve development goals; ii) a chapter on HIV/AIDS prevention by information centres; iii) case studies based on pretests and application of the first edition by communities in the Horn of Africa. The handbook originated from shared experience in the Horn of Africa. It could be of use to those who wish to start a Community Information Resource Center, as a means of transforming their community.
