Abstract

This handbook, aimed at professionals and practitioners in the southern African region, provides a range of appropriate methods for estimating water demand and use for the environmental, agricultural, rural domestic, industrial and urban sectors. The sections on the domestic rural and urban sectors include overviews of typical water demand figures for several southern African countries. Guidance on the advantages and disadvantages of different assessment techniques are provided and the texts supplemented by worked examples. Methods suitable for forecasting long-term water demand and use, and for assessing river transmission losses are also included. An appendix includes tables for water consumption of 35 different industries.
