Abstract

The effective, ecological and sustainable utilization and management of water resources is essential for improving livelihoods of the poor and fostering overall socio-economic development in southern Africa. A high priority has been set on the need to achieve sustainable utilization of natural resources and effective protection of the environment. Water takes top priority in this area. Guidelines are set out towards improving awareness and sharing knowledge. The knowledge laid out in this volume provides a useful reference for the water, environment and all water-related sectors such as agriculture, energy, industry, mining, tourism and livestock.
It provides a conceptual framework for environmental sustainability in water resources management. Furthermore, it touches upon economical, environmental and communal water related subjects with regard to poverty eradication and policy making.
