Abstract

The publication is written for technical and non-technical staff, engineers, and hygiene promoters involved in planning and implementing emergency sanitation programmes. It consists of four parts:
1) an emergency manual covering principles of assessment, recommended minimum objectives, excreta disposal, solid waste management, waste management and medical centres, disposal of dead bodies, wastewater management, hygiene promotion, community participation, programme design, and implementation;
2) guidelines for assessment and design, intended for use in the field to conduct rapid assessments, prioritise needs and design effective relief programmes;
3) a case study of Kala Camp in Luapula, Zambia, demonstrating how the guidelines can be applied in the field; and
4) a bibliography
