Abstract

The intention of this paper is to stimulate and open up a dialogue that leads to promotion and a qualitative improvement in the use of participation as an element of teaching programmes and as a learning and teaching approach. It discusses the challenges of teaching participation and participatory teaching for institutions of higher learning. Questions raised are: What are the learning needs for participation?; How should teaching programmes address participation?; What kinds of processes are needed?; and How are outcomes of learning programmes defined, achieved and evaluated?
