| Abstract | This field note reviews experience in Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, and, with less detail, in Zimbabwe and South Africa. It provides a summary of findings on ecosan activities, and a summary of successful ecosan types: Arborloo; Fosse Alterna; and Skyloo / Urine diversion dehydrating. Program issues taken into account are: promotion; appropriateness; user education; technology; and the role of subsidies. The review concludes by saying that current approaches must be more sensitive to what local economies and customs can embrace. |
