Abstract | The subject of this paper is disability and gender in rural sanitation. It provides ideas and suggestions illustrated by examples from the writer’s experience in South Africa. Adjusting to people’s abilities goes beyond the handicapped. It involves making provision for the young and old, the tall and short, slim and fat, those with limbs or no limbs, pregnant and menstruating women, the sighted and the sightless, those that are in a dependent stage of AIDS related diseases, those that need assistance to use the toilet and those who may or may not use a wheelchair. Participation in decision-making and considering designs are crucial. The paper gives examples and developmental impacts. |
