Milestones in water conservation : global freshwater programme

In stopping large dams on rivers, conserving wetlands, growing more crops with less water, and establishing and strengthening river basin organisations especially among countries sharing a single river, WWF is trying to make a difference in a fight where every drop counts. Many of their actions are controversial, and the strength of their advocacy and documented proof of better conditions obtained for people and nature have obtained result. This summary highlights twelve of the many successes achieved by WWF and their partners. Amongst them : the cancellation of the Spanish National Hydrological Plan, planned to redistribute the water of the Ebro river into four river systems hundreds of kilometres away; the cancellation of the Vefsna river hydropower generation project in Norway; in Pakistan agricultural water use was reduced with the help of WWF’s freshwater and agricultural experts, similar results are being found for other crops as rice, wheat, sugarcane and vegetables in other countries; in India the logic behind the controversial infrastructural project linking all rivers was successfully challenged.
