Abstract

This research report explores the detailed implications of the MDGs for Nepal on water and sanitation. It is an attempt to support MDG commitment of Nepal by calculating the additional number of households to be served and resources required to meet the targets, comparing these requirements with available resources and calculating the resource gap. To reach the sanitation target, an additional 14,000 households need to be served per month between 2000 and 2015, and an additional 11,300 households need to be served per month to reach the drinking water target. The total financial requirement to meet these targets is US$ 1,087 million and the resource availability for 2000 to 2015 is US$ 755 million, resulting in an annual resource gap of US$ 23 million. The report’s methodology and findings have been presented and debated at various meetings in Nepal and elsewhere, and inputs and comments have been incorporated.
