Abstract

This fact sheet defines personal hygiene. It gives a table on which diseases are prevented through which improved practices. Arguments are presented for policy makers, program managers and hygiene promoters. Hygiene is helped by an enabling environment as presented in the Hygiene Improvement Framework. Gender is not addressed explicitly, but the nature of transmission of diseases related to personal hygiene indicate that while each sex and age group has risks that need improved practices, caretakers of children have their own transmission risks and those from them to children and back to consider.
