Abstract

The project aim was to promote the reuse of treated human excreta in maize production. The assumption was that Urine Diversion dry toilets will produce faeces (humanure) and urine (ecofert) safe for agricultural use. The study done in Sanyati catchment involved six (600) hundred farmers with 0.5ha plots sub-divided into the following equal treatments regimes;
1. the control
2. commercial fertilizer treatment
3. urine only plot
4. the faecal matter and urine plot
Equal amount of water was applied through rainfall. Harvest determination was carried by weighing the yield from each of the treatment plots and comparisons done. Water productivity was done by calculating the amount of water used to produce a tone of maize per hectare. [authors abstract]
