Sand dams can provide sufficient water for domestic and productive uses even in some very dry environments. But the implementation and scaling-up challenges should not be overlooked.

Under the MUStRAIN project, demonstrations set out to test whether novel sand and sub-surface dam structures and schemes, when developed with higher levels of community participation and destined at both domestic and productive water needs, could be an effective solution to the challenge of improving access to water and livelihoods in the region.
This case study discusses the pilot project experiences and draws conclusions from the progress made and setbacks faced. These include lessons relating to the planning, design, costing and construction of dams in flood-prone sand rivers and related water supply technologies for multiple uses.
