Abstract

This briefing note presents findings on the life-cycle costs of rural water supply in Andhra Pradesh, India, and the implications for policy. Data on real costs show that per capita costs of provision is about US$ 12 per year with wide variations. Allocation are biased in favour of capital expenditure for hardware and neglect the softer costs. It is estimated that about 30% of investments or US$ 0.79 billion becomes ineffective or is lost due to improper maintenance. Read more about the findings: how households are coping and the impact of these strategies, who is included in decision making and the role of disaggregated costs. [authors abstract]
