The BRAC WASH programme is successfully catalysing the construction, upgrading and use of latrines in Bangladesh. but what happens when the pits fill up? An innovative research project has been commissioned to investigate the potential of turning the faecal waste from millions of pit latrines in Bangladesh into fertiliser, biogas and electricity.

The lead organisation for this research project is Biosol Energy Europe. A market survey was conducted for electricity, cold storage, and organic fertiliser. Bogra has been selected for piloting a model to manage the collection of pit contents and convert them into different commercially viable end-products. Fecal waste will be mixed with chicken manure and corn stovers required for the production of electricity, biogas and high quality bio-fertiliser.
