Abstract

This briefing note introduces Healthy Start, WaterAid's four-year advocacy priority (2015-2019) focused on improving the health and nutrition of newborn babies and children. The aim of the campaign is to advocate for access to water, sanitation, and hygiene promotion to be integrated into health policy and delivery locally, nationally and internationally.

The note outlines the scale of the problem and what needs to be done. It links neonatal mortality due to infections to a lack of adequate water, sanitation and hygiene services and practices in healthcare facilities. The note provides a list of 8 urgent actions that organisations working on international health issues, national health ministries and donor governments need to take.
