The World Water Week takes place in Stockholm, Sweden, and is organized by the Stockholm International Water Institution (SIWI). This annual event is a platform for all actors engaged in water and development issues. Around 2,500 experts, practitioners, decision makers and business innovators from around the world come together to exchange ideas, foster new thinking and develop solutions. This year's theme is "Water for Sustainable Growth". Therefore, the week contributes to the (proposed) Sustainable Development Goal 8 (SDG8) "to promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all".

During more than 140 events of different formats the most important topics concerning this theme will be discussed, i.e. financing, 2030 Agenda, integrity, gender issues, climate change, energy, sanitation, food, conflict resolution, water management. In addition, this event will follow up more generally on the implementation of the water related SDGs and the new climate agreement.

Launch of Watershed

Wednesday 31 August 17.30-19.00 we will proudly launch Watershed – empowering citizens. Watershed is a strategic partnership between the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, IRC, Simavi, Akvo and Wetlands International. It aims to build the capacity of civil society organisations at national level in Kenya, Uganda, Mali, Ghana, Bangladesh, India, and at international level, for evidence-based lobbying and advocacy on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) issues. For IRC, this strategic partnership is one of the crucial collective steps in reaching SDG6 "to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030". We believe good governance is key to reaching this goal.

IRC's sessions and side events

Good governance will be discussed during Juste Nansi's (IRC Burkina Faso Country Director) presentation on "Designing water sector governance to meet SDGs, Burkina Faso case" at the seminar "Good water governance for inclusive growth and poverty reduction". Furthermore, Lydia Mirembe (IRC Uganda Communication and Knowledge Management Advisor) will give a presentation on "Hand pump mechanics associations for job opportunities and water services" at the Seminar "Water and job opportunities: a critical nexus for growth". Besides that, attention will be payed to the Agenda for Change during one of the side sessions hosted by IRC, WaterAid, Water For People, Aguaconsult and Osprey Foundation. The Agenda for Change fosters the shift from a project-based approach to a system-wide approach. IRC will be convenor and presenter at many more sessions and side events. Check out the event announcement for the complete overview.
