| Abstract | Faecal sludge and septage management (FSSM) is increasingly acknowledged as a major challenge in India. This briefing note is a synthesis of an expert panel discussion on “FSSM Matters: Looking Forward”, which was held on 28 July 2017 in in Lucknow, India. The India Sanitation Coalition, IRC and TARU Leading Edge organised the dialogue in association with WaterAid India as part of the Insights series. The dialogue focused on urban FSSM issues in Uttar Pradesh, including the regulatory framework, the need for robust data for planning, infrastructure development and capacity building. The panel identified the main challenges for implementing FSSM related to the small percentage of urban households with a sewerage connection, funding, the limited availability of land for setting up of faecal sludge treatment plants (FSTPs) and the inadequate capacities of urban local bodies (ULBs). |
