Panaaba community joins Hilton team and partners after mini durbar

At the end of October, 2019, the Asutifi North District hosted the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation Vice President of Strategy and Programs – Marc J. Holley, and Senior Program Officer - Chris Dunston, for a week-long familiarisation visit to Ghana.

IRC and partners have worked separately over the years, strengthening local government systems towards bringing safe and reliable drinking water to the rural poor in Ghana. The funding from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation to implement the district based “Safe Water Strategy” initiative is in line with the Government of Ghana ambition to make water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services universally accessible for all people resident in Ghana, and to manage water resources sustainably for multiple purposes thereby contributing to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6.

The safe water strategy, which is captured in a District WASH master plan provides a framework for interventions, coordination and progress tracking towards the realisation of the WASH vision of the district. It covers the broad vision, programmes and strategies of the local authority and its development partners for the implementation of a 13-year initiative.

The master plan was launched in March 2018, and the implementation is currently in progress with some impressive gains made in respect of community and local government buy-in and political leadership; and strong partnership for delivery - leading to the provision of water services to unserved and underserved communities.

Vida Duti, IRC Ghana Country Director said, “The strategic partnership for delivery of the safe water strategy involves the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation grantees, the Asutifi North District Assembly, civil society/ NGOs and the traditional authorities in Asutifi North District of the Ahafo regions of Ghana. It is instructive to note that all partners are fully committed to achieving the collective vision of reaching everyone with access to sustainable and safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services in Asutifi North District by the year 2030; and presenting a case for replication to improve the livelihoods of the rural poor in Ghana.”

Following this development, Marc Holley and Chris Dunston of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation embarked on a two-day visit to the Asutifi North District to familiarise themselves, interact with the local actors and receive updates on the progress of implementation of the master plan which is contributing to the Safe Water Strategy of the Foundation.

The CNHF team visited four communities including Gambia N0.1, Ntrotroso, Wamanhinso and Panaaba. The team also visited the ANAM District WASH Hub and participated in the ANAM partners meeting hosted by the Asutifi District Assembly to update the team on progress of implementation of the safe water strategy.  The team finally rounded up their visit to the Asutifi North District with a debriefing session with the District Assembly and partners. The details of the visit to the Asutifi North District is captured in the attached special edition of the ANAM WASH Hubdate.
