Abstract

The Government of India has renewed its commitment to rural water and sanitation with the flagship schemes - Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) and Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), for sanitation and water, respectively. What are the various sources of funds available to cover the costs of these ambitious government initiatives, what are the funds available to sustain them, what and where are the gaps in the funds, and how can these be addressed? These questions were discussed during a webinar organised by Water For People India, IRC and the SuSanA India Chapter on 16 June 2022. This report provides a summary of the discussions between experts from civil society organisations and government, and local government elected representatives, which resulted in a set of recommendations to strengthen the provision of sustainable water and sanitation services to everyone.
