IRC and Asutifi North District launch Sanitation Project

On Tuesday June 7, 2022, at the District Assembly Hall in Kenyasi, IRC in collaboration with the Asutifi North District Assembly and partners launched the Latter-day Saints Charities (LDSC)-supported ‘District sanitation and hygiene services for communities’ project, geared towards strengthening local systems to deliver sanitation and hygiene services for all by 2030.

Since 2018, the Asutifi North District Assembly together with the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation grantees and partners have been implementing a 12-year Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Master Plan under the Asutifi North Ahonedie Mpontuo (ANAM) initiative. The plan seeks to ensure universal and sustainable access to WASH services by 2030 as envisaged by Sustainable Development Goal 6.

In 2020, the Latter-day Saints Charities joined the ANAM initiative and supported in expanding WASH services to schools and hard to reach communities and households. Over the one-year period, over 3000 people in deprived schools and hard to reach communities received improved WASH services and were trained in infrastructure management to sustain the facilities.

Setting the scene at the event, IRC Ghana Country Director, Vida Duti said, “… Based on the success of the first grant, LDSC approved a renewal grant for IRC and partners to further engage, this time with a focus on sanitation and hygiene.”

The one-year renewal project, under the ANAM initiative seeks to deliver the following components:

• Increasing access to sanitation and hygiene services in five schools, two health care facilities, 25 rural communities, and 60 households;
• Building the capacity of district officials and sub-district representatives in the management and maintenance of WASH facilities; and to
• Facilitate engagements with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to organise Behaviour Change Campaigns in communities, schools and health care facilities.
