Scaling area in Mali
With the development of our master plan, thanks to the support of IRC Mali, we were able to centralise and harmonise WASH development. From now on, each partner wishing to intervene is invited to align with this plan.
Sidy Diarra, Deputy Mayor, Nossombougou
Thanks to the awakening caused by IRC Mali, our view of rural maternity hospitals has been transformed. They have become the symbol of our renewed commitment to the well-being and health of our population.
Chaka Coulibaly, Mayor of Nossombougou
Nossombougou is a commune that is part of the Kolokani ‘Cercle’, a sub-division of the Koulikoro region. This is one of nine regions in the country and is located about 100 km north of the capital, Bamako. Nossombougou has 22 villages, and the population of 28,000 (in 2017) is expected to grow to 44,000 by 2030.
In 2018, the Mayor of Nossombougou, IRC and World Vision, developed a master plan to achieve the delivery of WASH services to everyone in the commune by 2030. The first step is to achieve 100% coverage in all health care facilities. On the four health care facilities in Nossombougou, only one had basic water services (in 2019). Partners are also working on improving WASH services in schools and reaching every household in the commune by 2030. The plan has inspired and driven political buy-in and serves as a roadmap for implementation. It helped set a vision and the steps needed to achieve.
In 2020, IRC supported the commune in conducting a finance study to better understand the costs and gaps related to the 2030 vision. The total capital requires at that time was estimated at 335,000 US Dollar.
