Partner area of IRC Ghana
I'm delighted the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are extending support beyond Asutifi North to Tano North Municipality, where the project will focus on increasing access to basic WASH services in schools and health care facilities.
We are committed to this project, which is part of the Ahafo Regional WASH programme and urge the focused district leaders to step up, own and facilitate the implementation of the WASH inventions for the benefit of our people.
Hon. George Yaw Boakye, Ahafo Regional Minister
We are excited about this grant, which is to provide WASH services in schools and healthcare facilities in the municipality, and capacity strengthening support of the Assembly to enable us to sustain the investments.
I'm happy the team has clarified the roles and responsibilities of partners in the implementation of the project. Our role as Assembly is clear and we are committed to the successful implementation of the initiative to help close the WASH access gap in the municipality.
Hon. Ernest Kwarteng, Municipal Chief Executive for Tano North
In 2022, Tano North Municipal Assembly, guided by its partners including the National Development Planning Commission, Ahafo Regional Planning Coordinating Unit, and Development Partners such as Conrad N. Hilton Foundation and IRC, civil society organisations, religious organisations, traditional leaders and community Members joined together under the Tano North Ahonidie Dwumadie (TNAD) initiative, to improve access to safe and reliable water and to improve sanitation.
In 2023, the Hon. Ernest Kwarteng, Tano North Municipal Chief Executive, presented the WASH Master Plan with pride, with a call to all to renew their commitment towards the development of the municipality.
The plan aims to increase the proportion of population with access to safely managed water sources from 9% in 2022 to 18% in 2026 and to 26% by 2030. Furthermore, it intends to increase the proportion of the population with access to at least basic water services from 62% to 76% in the medium term (2026).
The midterm target is to increase the proportion of population with access to potentially safely managed sanitation for rural areas from 13% to 32% by 2026. And to increase urban population access to potentially safely managed sanitation from 36% in 2022 to 78% in 2026 and further to 100% for both urban and rural by 2030.
It also intends to eliminate open defecation from 19% to 0% in the medium term.
