Abstract

This document presents the result of an internal evaluation on the use and maintenance of 2,873 latrines constructed in El Salvador since 1993, by Creative Associates International (locally known as Crea Internacional de El Salvador). Of these, 98% are composting latrines (in 9 community sub-projects) and 2% (in one community sub-project) are either water seal or ventilated improved pit (VIP) latrines. Research methods used were interviews, direct inspection of the latrines, and laboratory analysis of the compost. Of the 9 community sub-projects with composting latrines, 7 had adequate results and 2 inadequate. The community sub-project with water seal and VIP latrines showed excellent results. The report also provides general recommendations for rural sanitation projects.
